Now it’s official! Barcelona have finally confirmed the sacking of Ernesto Valverde.

Valverde was in charge of Barcelona between 2017 and 2020. He won the domestic double on his debut season at the Camp Nou stadium. Another La Liga title, as well as the Supercopa de Espana, arrived in the following campaign.

However, Valverde was heavily criticised for two consecutive Champions League eliminations. The Catalans lost 3-0 to Roma away in 2018. The following season, they suffered the notorious 4-0 Liverpool defeat.

Valverde was sacked following Barca’s defeat in the Supercopa de Espana semi-finals against Atletico Madrid. The Catalans lost 3-2 even though they were leading 2-1 by the 80th minute.

Valverde took charge of 145 games at Barcelona. Here is his record:

  • 145 games;
  • 97 wins;
  • 32 draws;
  • 16 defeats;
  • 67% winning rate;
  • 4 trophies.

Finally, Barcelona have appointed a new coach following Ernesto Valverde’s dismissal. Former Real Betis’ manager Quique Setien will take over at the Camp Nou stadium, the club have confirmed.

Setien has signed a deal until 2022.

Setien has been reportedly chosen due to his coaching philosophy and Johan Cruyff’s values. His football is based on the famous ‘tiki-taka’ playing style which is strongly associated with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.

The 61-year-old worked at Betis between 2017 and 2019. The Verdiblancos finished sixth on his debut season in charge which was their best result since 2005.

During his illustrious career, Setien used to coach Racing Santander, Poli Ejido, Logrones, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis.

As a player, Setien featured for Atletico Madrid, Racing Santander, Logrones and Levante. He spent 12 seasons at Racing and won the Supercopa de Espana with Atleti.

  • Emili Rousaud is Barcelona’s new vice-president.
  • He replaces Josep Maria Bartomeu who now only performs the functions of the president.
  • Barca’s former VP Jordi Mestre left his post in July due to reported misunderstandings between him and the Sports Area.

FC Barcelona have announced the appointment of a new vice-president, Emili Rousaud.

The 53-year-old has been a member of the board of directors since July 2015. During that period, he was partly responsible for the Social Area.

By training, Emili Rousaud is a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration at ESADE Business School, a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and a Master in Tax Consulting and Management (AGT) at ESADE Business School.

At a professional level, Rousaud is the founder and the general director of an electricity trading company Factor Energia, a member of the Plenary Session of the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona and a member of the Market Agents Committee of the Spanish Electricity Market. Besides, he is the vice-president of the Catalan association Grup de Gestors Energetics (GGE).

Apart from the above mentioned appointment, Barcelona are going to announce the appointment of David Bellver, as a new member of the Sports Area who will be responsible for performing functions linked to the international competitions by UEFA and FIFA.

Barcelona’s former vice-president Jordi Mestre officially left his post in July. After that, Josep Maria Bartomeu was balancing the responsibilities of both the president and the vice-president of the club.

  • The Spurs boss laments that now it’s more important to have fewer defeats than many victories.
  • He jokes that Carlo Ancelotti wasn’t hired because he has around 200 defeats and Arteta has 0.
  • Both Mourinho and Ancelotti were rumoured to be among the candidates for the Arsenal job.

Following Mikel Arteta’s appointment, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho can’t help himself and hits out at the new Arsenal head coach. The lack of experience is what surprises Mourinho in the Gunners’ choice.

“The only point I can find, and it is for us to laugh a little bit, is that years ago the best managers were the guys with more victories and now the best is the guy with the fewest defeats.

“So, Ancelotti has three Champions Leagues, won the league in Italy, France and England and won cups here and there – but Ancelotti has lost, I don’t know, 200 matches?

“I have lost 150-180 – Carlo is a little bit older than me. I think now it is not about how much you won, it is about the matches we didn’t lose. So, probably the best managers now are the managers with zero defeats.

“The only reason I can understand is that they look through the CVs and see guys with more defeats and guys with less defeats, so guys with less defeats are given the job. I cannot find another reason.”

Jose Mourinho was rumoured to be one of the candidates to replace Unai Emery, so was Carlo Ancelotti he mentioned.

However, Jose took the Tottenham job after all and his reaction shows that maybe he wanted to be the new Arsenal boss more.

Mikel Arteta was announced as the new Arsenal head coach on Friday, December 20.

  • Real Madrid are set to face Athletic Bilbao over the weekend.
  • Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano is fully aware of the threat.
  • He thinks that Blancos are even more dangerous now with all the changes Zidane has made.

Real Madrid have lost only one game of the La Liga season so far, and remain unbeaten at the Santiago Bernabeu across all competitions this season.

There’s little hope for Athletic Bilbao to salvage any points at the Santiago Bernabeu and their manager Gaizka Garitano knows as much, as he details all the changes in Zidane’s formidable outfit.

“They’re in their best form of the season,” Garitano said, previewing Sunday’s clash.

“They dominated the Clasico. They have one of the best squads in the world and no one likes playing against them because they have the best players.

“They’ve made some changes. Now they combine a bit more than before and they take more risks.

“They also squeeze forward more because they’re more committed to the press.”

Real Madrid are currently second in the La Liga table, having managed 10 wins, 6 draws and 1 loss in their 17 games. They’ve drawn their last two games against Valencia and Barcelona and will be looking forward to cruise past Athletic on Sunday.

  • With 643, Pele holds the record for most official goals scored for one club.
  • Leo is at 618 now, 26 goals away from setting a new record.
  • will follow Messi’s goal-scoring feats this season.
  • Join us on this epic journey and leave at least 644 comments to show how much we really want the GOAT to break Pele’s record while at Barca!

Frankly, it looks like almost every footballing record will belong to Leo Messi by the time he retires. And when you put it like that, you understand how lucky we all are to witness him play week in and week out.

Although the Argentine has said several times in the past that he doesn’t care about personal achievements, the amount of goals he has scored over the past 15 seasons with Blaugrana is staggering.

Currently, the 32-year-old has 618 goals scored for Blaugrana, which is actually the second-best record of all time. Only Pele with 643 goals for Santos has more, meaning Leo has to score 26 more goals to beat the Brazilian legend to yet another impressive achievement. Considering his previous seasons, the forward could well reach the milestone already this season.

Messi’s record over the last three seasons:

  • 2018-19: 51 goals in 50 games
  • 2017-18: 45 goals in 54 games
  • 2016-17: 54 goals in 52 games

You should keep in mind that this includes only goals in official games. A big chunk of Pele’s career goals came in friendlies.

Messi has added a goal to his tally on Saturday and the next opportunity to come closer to Pele’s landmark record will take place in 2020

  • Los Blancos informed Mino Raiola that they won’t sign his client in January.
  • Madrid still have to recover 200 million euros spent during the summer transfer window.
  • On top of that, the Whites don’t want to block the way to the first team’s XI for the likes of Valverde and Odegaard.

Real Madrid made a decision against signing Paul Pogba in January, Marca report. Los Blancos informed the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, that at the moment they have no intention to bring the midfielder to the Bernabeu.

There are several reasons for this decision. First of all, Madrid are still 200 million euros in the red after an eventful summer transfer window.

Secondly, there is a whole crop of young midfielders at the Bernabeu who are ready to play at the world-class level and Los Blancos don’t want to ‘block’ their way into the first team. Fede Valverde and Martin Odegaard are fully expected to be starters for the first team next season so there is no reason to spend hundreds of millions on Pogba.

In the light of Madrid’s refusal to sign the French midfielder, Raiola announced that Pogba is committed to Manchester United and wants to continue his career there.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also recently ruled out the possibility of the 26-year-old leaving Old Trafford in January.

Barcelona president has confirmed that he trusts Valverde to lead the team during the transition season.

Bartomeu wants the Basque to blend the dressing room veterans with up-and-coming players.Valverde, according to Barca president, has the ability to create the bond between these two generations.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has discussed the club’s development this season in the interview with Associated Press, once again confirming his trust in Ernesto Valverde.

“This season we have brought in young players who have to help us get through those stages,” Bartomeu said. “We think that Valverde is the ideal coach to lead this blending of a generation of players of a certain age who have been so successful with that of up-and-coming players.

“It is important to create this bond, this union, to make a new team and this new group that will carry Barca forward. And Valverde has this ability.”

That’s quite a peculiar statement to make, since the only three players whom Valverde managed to successfully integrate into the team are Nelson Semedo, Frenkie de Jong and Arthur while many others including Coutinho and Dembelefailed to make the impact expected from them under the Basque specialist.

In his press conference on Friday, Valverde has also insisted he isn’t worried about his future at the club as he still has the trust of those responsible.

“The other day, I was eating with the president,” said Valverde. “The club has always supported me and I feel respected. I do not have any problem with that.”

According to multiple reports, the Catalans want Valverde to stay until the end of the season before replacing him Ronald Koeman.

The Blaugrana have endured their worst start to the La Liga campaign in 25 years this season. Valverde’s men failed to claim three points in any of their first three away league games:

The ongoing slump in form was highlighted by the 3-1 loss at Levante on Saturday and the 0-0 draw against Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday. The CL result also made the Catalans squad ‘worried about how they’re playing’.

  • The coaching staff is supposed to leave Lionel out of the squad ahead of Getafe clash.
  • This could be regarded as a precaution.
  • Messi allegedly suffered groin in Villarreal game and was subbed off in the break.

It looks like our captain is having his worth start to the season.

The 32-year-old played just 45 minutes in Villarreal encounter on Tuesday before coming off for Ousmane Dembele after the break. At the post-match presser, Ernesto Valverde shared an optimistic update on Messi’s injury status and revealed that there was only slight discomfort in the abductor.

Lionel Messi is set to miss Barcelona’s away game against Getafe on Saturday. It’s reported by TV3 that the coaching staff doesn’t plan to risk the team’s key player and wants to offer extra rest to the Argentinian instead.

Lionel has taken part in three games out of seven so far this season. His first injury this year came quite early during the pre-season as he returned from holidays. After that, he missed all of the pre-season friendlies and his recovery tempos have mystically lowered.
