TRANSFER : JUST IN: Barca reportedly approached Van Dijk over potential move

  • Mirror’s Chief Football Writer John Cross reveals: “Barcelona made enquiries about whether Virgil van Dijk could be tempted to leave Liverpool.”
  • However, he adds that the Catalans were ‘quickly given short shrift’ by the player’s agent.
  • The 28-year-old hasn’t been dribbled past for more than a YEAR and is named as one of the contenders for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

Looks like Barcelona haven’t taken Matthijs de Ligt’s rejection lightly. According to Daily Mirror’s Chief Football Writer John Cross, they have even approachedΒ LiverpoolΒ Champions League heroΒ Virgil van DijkΒ over the possibility of a move.

That’s what Cross writes in his weekly column on this sensational matter: “Do not expect it to happen for a moment, but Barcelona made enquiries about whether Virgil van Dijk could be tempted to leave Liverpool. They were quickly given short shrift by the Dutch defender’s representatives. They did not bother taking it further.”

Van Dijk is labelled as one of Liverpool’s main heroes from the 2018/2019 campaign. The centre-back has gone throughout the whole season without being dribbled past. No wonder the 28-year-old is now believed to be one of the main contenders to scoop the 2019 Ballon d’Or. With Liverpool, Van Dijk scooped their 6th Champions League trophy, beating Barcelona 4-0 on their way to the final.

Clearly, Van Dijk could be the one to strengthen the Blaugrana defence. After all,Β Gerard PiqueΒ isn’t getting any younger despite his undeniable class whileΒ Samuel UmtitiΒ missed the majority of the 2018/2019 season because of the neverending knee injury. However, the most recent rumours claim Barca would prefer putting their trust in the 19-year-old January signing,Β Jean-Clair Todibo.

Matthijs de Ligt, meanwhile, is almost certain to join Juventus after having agreed on the personal terms with the Bianconeri. Unfortunately, his notorious agent Mino Raiola has chosen the most valuable option even though Ajax would have allegedly preferred De Ligt joining his former teammate Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona.

Apart from his other accolades, Van Dijk was also named the Premier League Best Player of the Year
